About The Refuge

About The RefugeThe Refuge is a Christian charitable organization dedicated to showing Christ's unconditional love, kindness, and offer grace to homeless and street youth in the Regional Municipality of Durham regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, life situation, or creed.

Each year The Refuge interacts with hundreds of different youth thousands of times each year.  In 2010, The Refuge interacted with 464 different youth 9,087 times.  In 2010 The Refuge served 10,865 meals to homeless and street youth in our community.  In 2010 The Refuge developed relationships with 228 youth that, prior to 2010, had never before come through the doors of The Refuge.  But more than a place to find food, more than a place to get clothing and personal hygiene products, more than a place to shower or do laundry, the Refuge is a home ... a loving, caring, compassionate community and family where youth can begin to heal from their horrific past.

92% of The youth that come to The Refuge have been sexually or physically abused.  78% of the youth have come out of or are presently a ward of the crown.  72% were asked to leave their homes by their parents or caregiver.  100% are lonely, terrified and feel unloved.  The Refuge is a community of believers that seek to provide a 'home' to these youth where they will feel loved, nurtured, encouraged, safe and feel that they belong ... a community in which they can heal so that they can move forward in a positive direction.

The Refuge is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency (84725 2764 RR0001).
