IN ANOTHER'S SHOES
They say that you cannot truly understand another person's life until you have walked in their shoes. This is exactly what The Refuge hopes to accomplish with the In Another's Shoes program.
The program is designed as a prevention program for at-risk children and youth. School classes or small groups are brought down to The Refuge. There they are given a multimedia presentation on youth homelessness and street life and the many myths that go along with this kind of life. Children and youth are taught that the "romantic" idea of living on the streets without parents, school, rules is actually a personal nightmare of lacking resources and not knowing what the next day may hold.
The group is then taken on a walking trip of the downtown core of Oshawa, visiting many of the places a street youth would have to go to survive and even given personal testimonials of youth who have searched for breakfast from garbage dumpsters or youth who have spent their nights living in a culvert or under a particular bridge.
The purpose of the program is to open the eyes of the at-risk children/youth to the harsh and cold reality of street life with the hopes that they choose a life of options living with their parents rather than a life on the streets.
