THE REVOLUTION
"A people without vision, soon perish." King Solomon
The Revolution is a program designed to help the youth overcome the negative impacts of their past issues and to bring an understanding for the need to set their own path to a better future. The program is based on the fact that youth involved in the street culture are involved in negative and criminal activities because the root causes of such choices often are a result of a traumatic life history of damaging events.
Many of the youth at The Refuge have been damaged by poverty of family relationships, shame issues, and a lack of personal dignity. Furthermore, Erik Erikson in his Theory of Personality lays out eight stages of personal development. These stages progress along various ages starting at birth with learning to trust. Erikson states that these eight states are connected to eight virtues that are hope, will, purpose, confidence, fidelity, love, care, and wisdom. However, if any of these states are not completed or are broken for some reason, the individual will revert back to the previous stage. For many of the youth at The Refuge the development was broken due to instability in family relationships, abuse, neglect or abandonment. A life of constant movement from home to home, group home to group home, foster care to foster care or life on the streets breaks the development in the first three stages.
In order to overcome this barrier, youth must understand from where they have come, who they currently are and undergo a transformation process -- a holistic process used to help a person understand their need to change and learn the skills required to overcome multiple barriers to obtain that change. The goal of the transformation process is to have the individual become an equal and contributing participant in society. Restoration is not the goal as to restore means to "put or bring back into a former or original state" (Webster's Dictionary: 1999). As a result, youth will find hope and a purpose for their lives.
The Revolution is a thirteen-week modular program that will be an open group session for people wanting to change or take control over their own lives.
"The problems that exist in the world today cannot be solved by the level of thinking that created them." Albert Einstein.
The Revolution helps individuals understand their need to change the way they think and creates an atmosphere for that change to take place. The goal of transformation through The Revolution will re-establish the foundation for the youth. Change breeds change. Once the process of change has begun, the taste of a changed life will encourage them to continue on. It is helping these individuals to develop a model and thinking of change that is the initial goal.
