WILDERNESS ROCS
Wilderness Rocs is a program that takes youth out of their street life environment to explore the purpose of their lives through the great outdoors and wilderness adventure.
Wilderness Rocs allows youth to experience camping, cooking over an open fire, and enjoying an environment many of them have never before experienced. During the four-day program, youth learn about teamwork, communication, problem solving, leadership, first aid, and map and compass work. However, through all these disciplines they learn about their lives and the decisions that they have to make when they return to their street lives.
After the program, the youth organize themselves and others to do a one-day community event using their newly developed skills. This helps them transfer the skills and lessons that they learned during the Wilderness Rocs program to their "real" lives on the streets of the Durham Region. The net result is that, upon their return, almost all street youth who have participated in the Wilderness Rocs program have gone on to make significant, positive decisions in their lives. The program works in conjunction with The Revolution.
